The 2009 Racing Season
Tonopah Speedway finishing the 26th year of racing excitement, the 2009 season brought a few changes to Tonopah Speedway, some new blood in the officers' seats and a "we can do this" attitude, have made the 2009 season an exciting one. The season started with 2 playdays instead of 1, more time to see just what your car can handle.
The classes were still the same as 2008: Pro Stock, Street Stock, Bomber, Mini Stock, Dwarf and Mini Sprint.
Car counts for the beginner classes have been on the rise since 2006, Bombers and Mini Stock classes have steadly been on the rise as new competition arives at Tonopah Speedway. Pro Stock and Street Stock classes still struggling over rule changes and the cost of maintaining and operating a much stronger class. (The price you have to pay to go faster than the year before.)
The signs have been changed to a much more durable material as to cut cost in the future, a new Web Site was built to replace the old newspaper style of the years past, also to make it more user friendly. A few rules for insurance purposes have been implemented: new gates to keep race fans from the pits, and now there will have to be some sort of wall constructed around corner 1 as to protect our racing fans when entering the speedway.
On the racing side, 2009 managed to keep all cars on the wheels (too bad huh) as we know the fans come for the excitement. Yeager in the #8 Pro Stock finally figured out how to keep the Fire out of the cockpit. We had only a few minor crashes sending drivers to the Med Center for a quick check up to make sure no broken bones or head injury, a few cars tried the airborne move to get around other drivers and gain an advantage. The #15 bomber of Wild Bill awaiting the new race season, that car hasn't left the track in 2 yrs, how does he keep it together? Will it be back for2010? The 2009 season brought rookies to the track, now they have the need for speed, doing it fast, doing it dirty, we will be looking for them in 2010 to see if they really have what it takes to be a race car driver.
The Champions of 2009, will they return to retain their titles? Or will there be a new driver that is in the shadows
moving up on the inside to become one of many Champions of Tonopah Speedway?
The weather for 2009 seemed to be on our side with only one race being pounded by showers and making for an interesting evening of racing. "I can't see," is what come from the drivers' mouths as they return to the pits.
2 laps, 5 tearoffs and then mud in your eye, driving blind and on a surface as slick as-----, you know it had to be one to remember.
